Claudia Chaseling has been named as one of "81 of the most significant painters working in Germany in the past two decades” in a new publication by Mark Gisbourne and Christoph Tannert.
The editors of ‘Dissonance – Platform Germany’ present eighty-one of the most significant painters living and working in Germany in the past two decades. They have the courage of strong opinions, turn the spotlight on unsuspected treasures, and tease out the unexpected value in aesthetically thrilling achievements of programmatic pluralism. A vital survey of one of the most exciting chapters in the more recent history of art in Germany.
Claudia Chaseling (b. Munich, 1973; lives and works in Berlin) rose to international renown with outsize Spatial Paintings, abstract murals that project from the wall. She was invited to produce an edition for the publishing house to accompany the launch of this book, with her major paintings from recent years included in the publication.
Time closes and opens eyes, for instance, refers to the planned construction of a hydropower plant at Lukovo Pole, Macedonia, that would have ravaged the entire region’s ecosystem. Lordy Lord, meanwhile, is about illegal logging in the forest of the Chuka in Kenya that led to the indigenous people’s displacement. illusion underneath the sun addresses the appropriation of land for ostensibly eco-friendly purposes—in this instance, the construction of the world’s largest solar power station in Ouarzazate, Morocco—and policies of losing visualizes the drying-up of the Aral Sea in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, whose tributaries are diverted for irrigation of the surrounding cotton plantations. Chaseling’s paintings are an intuitive response to and tentative exploration of these disturbing developments.
Dr. Claudia Chaseling completed her studio-based PhD in visual arts with a focus on spatial painting in 2019 at the ANU School of Art & Design.
